Coal Prices hold steady

Spot prices for thermal coal in Qinhuangdao, China’s top coal port, remain unchanged from a week earlier, with demand high with the arrival of summer when there is high coal and power consumption.
Current Coal Coal with a calorific value of 5,800 kcal/kg (NAR) was quoted in the range of $114 to $116 US Dollars per metric tonne.
Coal with a calorific value of 5,500 kcal/kg was between $110 and $111 US Dollars.
There has been some return of hydropower generation following a drought a southwestern China which has eased power shortages some.

Coal Prices across Asia on the rise.

Rising demand from China and India is driving thermal coal prices higher and higher with the spot market for sub-bituminous coal of 5500 KcKg selling for more than $112 in China.

Commodity experts predict global prices to remain strong and go up further this summer.

In 2009, China’s coal imports more than doubled to 130 million tonnes from the previous year. China has also closed its smaller and more dangerous mines. coupled with a huge drought which has severely hampered hydroelectric power. All culminating into increased demand from coal power sector.
